Answers to the questions we hear most often about regional inequity, our data, and the work of Every Speller Counts.
Scripps publishes a list of regional sponsors but does not publish per-sponsor school enrollment counts, which schools each sponsor covers, or which counties feed which regional bees. (Publishing this directly is part of what we're asking Scripps to do.) To compile this dataset, we built a data scraper that pulled school information from Scripps' regional pages and cross-referenced it with individual sponsor announcements, school district records, and county or state education department data. The full compilation took several weeks.
Where sources differed, we used the most recent verifiable count. Detailed per-record source notes are available on our Methodology page.
